Who is The Legacy Fund?
The Legacy Fund of The Columbus Foundation is one of just a handful of permanent funds across the country which specifically addresses the needs of the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender (GLBT) Community. The Legacy Fund’s main service area is central Ohio (Franklin and its contiguous counties), however the mission permits the Fund to help charitable organizations in Ohio and beyond.

The Legacy Fund is a unique endowment fund where you can translate your passion into action for the future of the entire central Ohio GLBT community, with a current pledge or planned gift to The Legacy Fund.

What does The Legacy Fund do?
With the advice of trusted community leaders, The Legacy Fund:

Makes strategic investments (grants) to help new and existing organizations become financially sustainable and achieve programmatic excellence;

Provides technical support to develop strong community leadership and strengthen our institutions; and

Ensures through permanent, planned gifts that our community can face any challenges—now and for generations to come.

Why does The Legacy Fund exist?
The Legacy Fund Exists To:
Secure a permanent source of funding for the central Ohio GLBT community, well beyond the lifetimes of our donors;
Stabilize and support the current needs of our community;

Invest strategically in the future of our community and its institutions;

Protect the civil rights and the mental and physical health of GLBT central Ohioans; and;

Enrich the cultural life and heritage of GLBT persons in central Ohio.

Legacy Fund of the Columbus Foundation Names New Advisory Board Members

Columbus – The Legacy Fund of The Columbus Foundation has announced the appointments of Omar Faruk, Leslie Fine, Jeff Mackey and Barbara Sokol to the Legacy Fund of The Columbus Foundation Advisory Board of Trustees.

“We are very pleased with our recent appointments,” said Legacy Fund Co-Chair Bill Brownson. “Each person brings a great deal of talent and experience to the board.”

Legacy Fund Co-Chair Susan White, said “the variety of experiences that each of these individuals has will enhance the work that the Legacy Fund provides to our community.”

Current Legacy Fund Advisory Board members include: Sandy Anderson, Kathy Bowman, Chad Braun, Bill Brownson, Karen Cookston, Steve Daley, Scot Dewhirst, Gregg Dodd, Lyn Greer, Jo Hickman, Darla Luebbe, Scott Owens, Jose’ Rodriguez, Linda Schuler, Marianne Steger, Kevin Tyler and Sue White.

Omar Faruk is a Franklin University student and employee. He founded a youth services organization in New York and started his own web design company as a teenager. He was named the “Ernst & Young/NFTE Youth Entrepreneur of the Year” and in 2005 he was named “Top Young CEO” by Initiative for Competitive Inner Cities (ICIC) and Merrill Lynch.

Leslie Fine is a marketing professor at The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business. She has been very active in the community and has served on both the Stonewall Columbus and Kaleidoscope Youth Center boards.

Jeff Mackey is a partner in the Westerville law firm of Fusco, Mackey, Mathews and Gill, LLP. His legal practice includes estate-planning. He has worked with an endowment fund in Westerville that was part of the Columbus Foundation. Jeff has also participated as a speaker of a variety of Ohio State Bar Association seminars that the Legacy Fund has conducted for more than five years.

Barbara Sokol has been a long-time community advocate and philanthropist. She participates on numerous boards and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for various charities, political candidates and causes. Barbara currently serves on the Cincinnati Opera Board, was a long-time member of Buckeye Ranch Board, the Columbus Symphony, and more. She is a retired employee of The Ohio State University.
